FACTSHEET: Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club
Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club is an arm of Las
Comadres Para Las Americas, founded by Dr. Nora de Hoyos Comstock in April
2000.
The
Book Club’s mission is to connect and empower readers and Latino authors everywhere
through networking, culture, and literature.
It is open to all peoples and all ages, and is
free of charge.
The Book Club is run by the Leadership
Team comprised of Edith Reyes, Project Manager; Julia Abrantes, Literary
Relations Coordinator; and Maria Ferrer, Media Relations Coordinator.
It began in New York City in 2004. In 2008, the Club partnered with the
Association of American Publishers to get book submissions from an array of
publishers and opened book clubs coast to coast. Currently, there are book clubs in 16 cities
and over 22,000 Comadres nationwide.
More book clubs are being formed in new cities.
The Book Club features a Book of the
Month, as well as “conversation with” books with complimentary themes. There is a Teleconference at the end of each month
with the authors to which everyone can tune in and hear the interviews. Plus, Comadres and Friends are invited to
join the Twitter Chat during the Teleconference at @ReadLatinoLit.
New this year is the Book Club’s
first annual Summer Reading List,
which was received with great acclaim.
Per Project Manager Edith Reyes, the Summer Reading List complements the
established monthly Book Club meetings and the Teleconferences. Check out the list here:
