FEBRUARY 2021 – BOOKS OF THE MONTH

Image
February is the month of love, of friendship.  We celebrate with a fun mouth-watering romance and a dynamic search for voices redefining Latino Identity.  Happy Reading, and as always, Read Latino Lit! BOOK OF THE MONTH A TASTE OF SAGE by Yaffa S. Santos Harper Paperbacks Lumi Santana is a chef with the gift of synesthesia—she can perceive a person’s emotions just by tasting their cooking. Despite being raised by a single mother who taught her that dreams and true love were silly fairy tales, she decides to take a chance and puts her heart and savings into opening a fusion restaurant in Inwood, Manhattan. The restaurant offers a mix of the Dominican cuisine she grew up with and other world cuisines that have been a source of culinary inspiration to her. When Lumi’s eclectic venture fails, she is forced to take a position as a sous chef at a staid, traditional French restaurant in midtown owned by Julien Dax, a celebrated chef known for his acid tongue as well as his brilliant smile. She offers a personal and illuminating account of how the rhetoric around immigration has not only long informed American attitudes toward outsiders, but also sanctioned willful negligence and profiteering at the expense of our country’s most vulnerable populations—charging us with the broken system we have today. An urgent call to fellow Americans to open their eyes to the immigration crisis and understand that it affects us all, this ho

2020 LATINO BOOKS OF THE YEAR

LAS COMADRES AND FRIENDS NATIONAL LATINO BOOK CLUB 2020 BOOKS OF THE YEAR   Las Comadres and Friends National Latino Book Club is pleased to announce the inauguration of our annual Books of the Year List.  It's an exciting list populated with debut and award winning authors, celebrities, and Poet Laureates. Books come from traditional publishing houses, small presses, university presses and some are independently published.  For years, Latino voices have struggled to be heard, to be counted.   Well, Las Comadres & Friends book club has listened, and we want to make sure all Latino authors are counted.   It is our goal to produce an annual Books of the Year list with as many books by Latino authors as possible.   Books on this list include those selected as Books of the Month, Conversations with Books (both in italics), and our Summer Reading List selections.   We are also happy to note that many of these books are available in Spanish, and digital and audio formats
